Open Letter: Investment in Alternative First Responders

South Australia’s political leaders are being urged to rethink how community safety is funded, with a growing demand for care-led alternatives to policing that prevent harm.

Alternative First Responders are not new, they are logical and proven to reduce harm. Even with reducing crime rates, the commitment to support the expansion of policing remains the status quo. Advocates are asking why this is still the default approach.

The Alternative First Responders campaigncoalition organisationsand supporters, have set out these priorities in an open letter to Members of Parliament, Senators, and candidates across the political spectrum, calling for courageous policy and increased investment in community-led alternatives.

  • Urgent funding for alternative first responders as a matter of health, safety and dignity
  • Courageous policy outside of law enforcement that aligns with the real needs of everyday South Australians
  • Alternatives that ensure the right response, by the right people, with the right support.
